Obedience
Obedience is a 20 minute long durational performance piece. I undressed and covered my body with clear packaging tape; the process of undressing and taping correlated to a personally lived experience spoken out loud, with each quote relating to the body part being taped.
As more of these anecdotes were shared, my body became more and more restricted in movement. My legs were taped together, my arms could barely bend, my torso was distorted under the pressure of the wrappings. The final piece of tape was wrapped firmly around my mouth.
Though these stories came from my own past, many of them are shared lived experiences amongst women and trans individuals all across North America. The clear packaging tape metaphorically references the physical and emotional restrictions placed on women, trans, non-binary, and gender-non-conforming people as both a transparently intangible and physical constraint.
